The Commission for Women engages in issues pertaining to the advancement
of women here at the University. Our committees have been broken down
into two groups: Standing Committees and Special
Committees.
We encourage you follow our progress through our meetings minutes, Commission's
listserv, WMNSPEAK and our
CFW newsletter, The Networker.
Feel free to contact the Commission with any thought or concerns you have
pertaining to women's issues. We thank you for the opportunity to serve
you and look forward to meeting the challenges before us.
STANDING COMMITTEES
Standing Committees, which are noted in our Bylaws, represent established
areas of concern for women. These are on going committees that seek to
build upon each prior year's advancements.
Chair's Advisory Committee
Advisory Chairperson: Pamela Hindle
Kathryn St.Clair Ellis, Lori Epperson, Nancy Goslee, Deborah HainesNancy McGlasson, Mary Papke,
Jennifer Richter, Cheryl Travis
The Chair's Advisory Committee supports the Chairperson in formulating
plans, expressing concerns, engaging in research, and implementing Commission
activities. The Committee, a microcosm of the larger Commission, represents
various constituent components of the Commission, and provides balanced
advice and counsel to the Chairperson. In addition, the Advisory Committee
participates with the Chairperson in monthly meetings with the Chancellor.
Communications Committee
Communications Chairperson: Deb
Haines
Lori Epperson, Pam Hindle, Rose Parker
The Communications Committee is important to the CFW because it provides
visibility and connectivity for CFW members and campus community through
use of the website (http://cfw.utk.edu),
the CFW biannual publication The Networker
and by instituting online committee communication via the Blackboard
CourseInfo CFW site at online@utk.edu.
Equity Issues Committee
Equity Issues Convener: Pam Hindle
Alan Chesney, Kathryn St. Clair Ellis, George Hoemann, Kerry Howland,
Jo Milton, Jenny Richter, Cheryl Travis
The Equity Issues Committee is engaged in several exciting activities.
This Committee is working with the Office of Equity and Diversity and
the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment to recast the historic
annual Faculty Salary Study in a new, user-friendly format. The goal,
embraced jointly by these offices, is to render the report accurate
and more widely understandable. The Equity Issues Committee is also
working with Institutional Research to harvest information form the
2003 Gender and the Workplace Survey, in preparation for a comprehensive
report to the Chancellor on a variety of gender and workplace issues.
An additional goal for this Committee is to conduct a study of gender
and salaries for non-academic UT personnel
Mentoring Committee
Mentoring Chairperson: Nancy
Goslee
Fadia Alvic, Joy DeSensi, Kathryn St. Clair Ellis, Pam Hindle, Kerri
Lovegrove
The Mentoring Committee offers opportunities for women faculty, staff,
and students to form mutually beneficial mentor/mentee relationships.
One goal of this committee is to more clearly define its purpose. Another
goal is to codify a plan for developing and executing mentoring activities
that target women students who are undecided about their academic goals
and introduce them to mentors who have broad and varied interests and
backgrounds. This Committee is also keenly interested in introducing
this campus to “mentoring circles”. These circles are small
groups of campus citizens from diverse backgrounds who form relationships
with each other, based on mutual trust and respect, for the purpose
of identifying and overcoming obstacles blocking personal and professional
growth.
Safety Advisory Committee
Safety Advisory Chairperson:
Kasey Baker, Tammi Brown, Maxine Thompson Davis, Kathryn St. Clair
Ellis, Deb Glenn, Pam Hindle
This committee is involved with issues of high concern for students,
faculty, staff, administrators, and families of all definitions: the
safety of individuals who live, work, and learn on this campus. A major
goal for this year is for the CFW Safety Committee to work with the
Campus Safety Committee and the Traffic and Parking Authority to increase
awareness of safety issues of particular importance to women. A secondary
goal is to coordinate activities with the Fraternity Affairs and Panhellenic
Advisors to educate men and women students on issues of dangerous and
hurtful behavior such as drinking to intoxication and date rape.
Work and Family
Work and Family Convener: Pam Hindle
Alan Chesey, Kathryn St. Clair Ellis, Mary Evans, Wendy Syer
The Work and Family Committee will explore issues that affect campus
citizens and their families. Examples of these issues are: child care,
elder care, family and sick leave, flex time, other employment benefits,
positions requiring overtime work, and preparing for retirement. This
Committee is also interested in living wage issues. The Work and Family
Committee is engaged with the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment
in planning a series of focus groups for assessing campus needs for
child and elder care assistance.
SPECIAL COMMITTEES
In addition to the standing committees, the CFW has several special committees,
which tend to be narrowly focused or pertinent to a specific need. These
committees are: Angie Warren Perkins Award Committee, the History and
Archives Committee, the Notable UT Woman Committee, the Women of Achievement
Committee, and the YWCA Tribute to Women Committee.
