in Knoxville. In 1977 she received the first Ph.D. awarded by UT’s

Dr. Julian has served in a number of positions at the university in a
career that spans more than forty years. Her first academic appointment
at UT was as an instructor in the Department of English, which at that
time encompassed Speech and Theatre. Later, Speech and Theatre became
a separate department and Julian, having earned a doctorate, became an
assistant professor in the department. She ultimately attained the rank
of full professor.
Administrative posts for Dr. Julian include ten years as Director of Children’s
Theatre at the university, Director of Graduate Studies for the Speech
and Theatre Department, and Head of the Department of Speech Communication.
She was named Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs in 1995
and two years later, Director of the Center for Undergraduate Excellence.
In 2002 she became interim dean of the newly created College of Communication
and Information; the “interim” was dropped from her title
in 2004.
In addition to her duties as dean, Dr. Julian is presently on the editorial
board for the Journal of the Association for Communication Administrators.
She was a member of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) General
Education Committee (1999-2001), and the UT Board of Trustees Student
Affairs Committee (1995-1999). She has served on the UT Faculty Senate
for two separate three-year terms and has been a member of the Commission
for Women at three different times.
Dr. Julian was president of the Tennessee Speech Communication Association,
which in 1996 named her Communication Educator of the Year. Julian was
also president of UT’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi honorary society.
She was honored with a Chancellor’s Citation for Extraordinary Public
Service in 1997.
Dean Julian plans to retire from her present position on June 30, 2005.
